Henry Winkler signs copies of his books at WHSmith

Monday, July 7th, 2008

 Kaite & Henry Winkler

Kaite with Henry Winkler, who played the Fonz in “Happy Days”.

TV legend Henry Winkler was at WHSmith in the Arndale today, Sunday 6 July. Many came to see him and he delighted children with his coin trick. He breaks a 25cent coin in his mouth and then it comes back as a full coin again. Henry was there for a couple of hours signing copies of his children’s book series about a boy called Hank Zipzer, ‘the worlds greatest underachiever’.

It started off a bit frustrating at first. First the Arndale security would not let us interview those that met him. Then the mic lead I borrowed from ALL FM crackled and popped. So, we decided to do the interview even if the mic lead wasn’t working. I know.. but what where we suppose to do? I wish I had my own equipment.

Finally, the mic lead worked and Kaite interviewed Henry for The Hulme Tune on Thursday 10 July. Kaite sat next to him and asked him about his dislexia and how much of the books’ character, Hank Zipzer, was based on himself. Henry talked about how much the books has been selling and what was special about 19th August 2008.

Afterwards, Henry gave her a kiss on the cheek and signed a copy of one of the books. Kaite was thrilled to have met him and couldn’t wait to tell all her family and friends across the world. WHSmith also took pictures, as well.

Tomorrow he’s off to a Stockport school to see the children. You can tell he really loves children. Henry is a real down-to-earth nice guy and WHSmith were hospitable, too - we appreciate that - thank you guys.

You can hear the interview on ALL FM on this Thursday’s show!

Peace Will Bring Show to a Close - The Tune Ends.

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

In March 2008 Moss Side’s Peace FM was granted a 5 year license from Ofcom. This means that there will be a full time radio station serving Moss Side, Hulme and South Manchester, even though ALL FM are still broadcasting shows from the Zion Arts Centre.

Peace FM have transmitted from the Zion Arts Centre in the past when they had a limited 1-month RSL license. This time its for 5 years. I believe that ZAC is still the place where they will transmit and thus serve Hulme.

Broadcasting can start within 2 years, but Peace FM might even be on air towards the end of the year.

This means that the show I do for ALL FM - The Hulme Tune - will be axed!

I am an individual and am, in no way, funded by anyone to do my show. All my shows’ expenses have come from my own pocket. I won’t be joining Peace FM as I’ve enjoyed my time at ALL FM.

It’s up to Peace FM to run with their vision for Hulme when they start broadcasting. I don’t believe that gangs go around listening to community radio. Not the ones I’ve seen.

Community radio should be for the whole community and not one select group of people. Erinma Bell has said in the press that they want other genres of music to be played, a powerful signal and quality professional productions. Com radio relies on voluntary staff, many of whom want to break into the industry. Any one with professional skills would want to be paid. Unless they are really dedicated to the vision and want to stay for free until advertising revenue is built up to pay them.

There again, should the BBC or Independent Local Radio snap up the talent, then Carisma’s Peace FM may struggle quality wise, until it can break free of reliance on funding and into being an independent local radio station capable of attracting advertising from businesses willing to pay for exposure on yet another new radio station. With so much competition from other ILR stations (Galaxy 102, X-FM, Smooth FM, Rock FM, Big 1458am, Century 105, Imagine FM and Key 103), news papers, websites, billboards and other advertising platforms in Manchester, it has to be competitive to survive. They may have people willing to listen regularly, but will it be enough?

It has taken years for ALL FM to reach the level they have, having a wide variety of shows and opening studios in East Manchester and Hulme. It could mean that ALL FM may close their Hulme studio, as this would compete with Peace FM and its not about competition - it’s about the people we serve.

I will still do a show, but not from Hulme. I will chat to ALL FM staff to see what their schedule is like in the future. In the meantime, enjoy the last of the shows… and thanks for listening!

Hulme Adult Learning Centre - to be or not to be?

Friday, April 18th, 2008

That is the question that has been on people’s minds - not another English Literature lesson, but what is the future of the Adult Learning Centre, Stretford Rd, Hulme (above the library)?

I’ve spoken to reliable sources and they have informed me that over the past few years there has been job loses at Hulme’s Adult Learning Centre, run by Manchester City Council. At the moment there are moderators from Ofsted checking that each department is functioning to the set standards for local adult education.

If you remember back in the 1990’s, Hulme people were promised that Chevassut Street Primary School would not close. In 1999, guess what.. it closed. So, can we believe what officials now tell us?

I spoke on the phone to Martin Hellewell, Press Officer - Manchester City Council, about the future of the ALC, Hulme. He asked me to reveal my sources. I did not and they remain confidentially anonymous. Mr Hellewell went on to say that the merger of MANCAT & City College Manchester doesn’t effect the ALC and that in the near future it will..

..and you’ll have to tune in to ALL FM 96.9 from 10-11am 24th April for the answer.

Don’t worry I’ll post a podcast after.. for all those that miss it.

Also on the show: how to see a lawyer for free and I interview artist Camilla Lyon who is exhibiting her architectural delights at Cube Gallery on Portland St. This would be a YouTube video on these pages this weekend.
